Portage Central Graduation Party Candy Buffet

My friend Amy and photographer of the images below planned a graduation party for her son, Joshua this past June and asked me to create a candy buffet for the occasion. For the table design we stuck to Portage Centrals colors of blue and gold (yellow) for the candy colors and filled apothecary jars with layered M&M's, york peppermint pattie pieces, gumballs, lemon heads, sixlets, banana laffy taffy, lemon hard candy sticks and blue raspberry licorice. To complete the table, Joshua's graduation cake was perfectly centered in the middle of all the candy.

Moroccan Themed Sweet Buffet

This moroccan themed sweet buffet was so much fun to create for the Danielle and Brandon's wedding this past May. Danielle and her planner, Whitney came up with the color combo and let me do the rest. I was able to incorporate red and gold colored glassware, wooden cake stands and a large red bamboo shallow bowl for this unique table.

I also had the pleasure of working with along side Dena from Shabby Chic Cakes and More. Dena made scrumptious red velvet and spice cupcakes as well as wedding bliss, shortbread and chocolate meringue cookies. Yumm! My favorite element of the table was the cupcake tower complete with a cake topper and gold wrapped mint chocolates cascading out from the bottom.

Sweet Buffet Inspiration Board

Part of the design process when I create a candy buffet is to pull all of my idea's into an inspiration board. I take the color scheme/theme of the event and place different types of candies and/or desserts and decorative elements into the board to reflect the clients vision. Inspiration boards are a professional way to present a client with my overall design inspiration for their sweet table.

Here is an inspiration board that I created for a wedding I have coming up at the end of Septmember at Thornapple Creek Golf Club.

A Pie Buffet

Mmm, pie, a delicious, simple, cost-effective option for your wedding and/or event. You have seen candy and dessert buffets and I have even talked about donut buffets, but how about a pie buffet?

Group a variety of different flavored pies large or small, assemble in a tablescape and your guests will be coming back slice after slice.

Vintage DIY Valentine's Decorations

Decorating for Valentine's Day with a vintage feel seems so romantic. Here are some images to inspire you to decorate in a vintage way this Valentine's Day by using items you may have around the house, and if your not the crafty type a few of the items below can be purchased.

Here are some cute cupcake toppers made from doilies, tissue paper, ribbon, beads, and a toothpick. Best of all if you are not in the mood to create them, you can purchase these exact toppers from The Polka Dot Shop on Etsy.

With an old newspaper in your home cut rectangular pieces, fold over a string with glue and use a heart hole punch to create this easy DIY garland or purchase them a pre-made one from Cori Kindred.

With those left over doilies your have why not paste them on a white paper bag, weigh down the bottom of the bag with liter, sand, etc and illuminate them with a tea light. A beautiful, cost effective latern for your table or entry way. (Image via Martha Stewart)

Lastly, milk glass vases are a great way to incorporate a vintage feel to any room. Using pink, red, purple, etc... flowers place them into a milk glass vase. If you do not have a milk glass vase they can be found at thrift stores and antique shops. (Image via Wedding Bee)

Choosing which colors to decorate our home in for the holidays is always a dilemma for me because I am a person who loves to change it up each season. There are so many color options out there these days it was hard to choose, but I ended up going with metallic gold and silvers. I chose gold and silver because I love how our house glistens, and in the years to come I can always add any color to enhance the look.

Candy Corn Topiary

This may be one of the most unique candy topiary idea's I have come across. It's a candy corn topiary! Kelly Porter of Porter House Designs created these not so ordinary topiary's for her harvest/Thanksgiving sweet table. The color combination she used for the table is very unexpected for Thanksgiving, but she pulled it off. I love how the orange really pops next to the cobalt blue. Kelly also created the printables and you can purchase them at her Etsy shop here.

Tori and Dean's Vow Renewal Party

After coming across these images posted at My Sweet & Saucy, I couldn't resist not sharing. Tori and Dean, who most of you probably are aware of recently renewed their vows, and Melody, owner/pastry chef of My Sweet and Saucy had the pleasure of creating a Sweet Table for their celebration.

Melody didn't miss a detail in this table, from the hand painted feather on the mini cakes to the beautifully executed cake decoration. There were also many other creative details/prop's used throughout the event that were thoughtfully incorporated including the retro gumball machine, shoe display, and feathers to toss.

Recently I purchased some Kale and Cabbage from my local farmers market to warm up the look of our entry way. This was my first time using them to decorate instead of eat, and I am amazed with how great they look bunched together. This got me thinking about incorporating kale and cabbage into a wedding, and how unique and beautiful it would be.

This post is long overdue...My full time job and our new addition ( 7 wk. old puppy, Java) have been keeping me very preoccupied lately. Any who, a couple months ago Katie Maxwell of Ta Da Event Coordination hosted the quarterly KWEP (Kalamazoo Wedding Event Professionals) meeting at the Kalamazoo Country Club. She asked me to be a featured vendor along side Lauren Schmidt from Pegasus Photography who captured the images below of my buffet.

It was a wonderful networking opportunity filled with talented wedding professionals from all over Southwest Michigan.

Purple Whale Party

Krembo

Room for Dessert introduced me to something I must try soon! It is a sweet treat called a "Krembo", meaning "cream-in-it" and is very popular in Israel during the winter months. It comes wrapped in colorful aluminum foil, and consists of a round biscuit base on the bottom and whipped egg whites cream from above, coated in a thin layer of chocolate. There are also vanilla and mocha flavored Krembo's.

Tuscan Candy Buffet

I had the pleasure of designing a Tuscan themed candy buffet for Danielle and Keith's wedding reception at the Gull Lake Country Club last weekend. They chose a great variety of sweets such as chocolate covered pretzels, almonds, and sunflower seeds, plus jelly bellies in toasted marshmallow, red raspberry, and cappuccino flavors. We also incorporated an Italian wedding tradition using ivory jordan almonds by individually packaging five jordan almonds for the guests that symbolize health, wealth, fertility, longevity, and happiness for the couple.

Other details included in this design were lots of wine corks, a wooden wine box from France, a vintage lace table cloth with a grape design, and burgundy table runner's made by my mom.

Tracy Park of Park Place Design was a huge part of making this table look divine by designing the beautiful sunflower bouquets and taking the pictures below for me. The table would not have been complete with out the sunflowers, thank you Tracy!

InFrame Bride Magazine Photo shoot

Last June, I was thrilled when Aletha of Pearls Events asked me to design a sweet buffet for a photo shoot she was coordinating for InFrame Bride Magazine. The whole shoot was magical because of everyone involved, the gorgeous setting, and the exceptional weather we had.

For the sweet buffet I searched out different shades of pink candies and used some gold to warm-up the look. Abbey Fowler of Syd Design created the adorable, "sweet shop" sign for the display, and Events by I Candy provided the apothecary jars. Without their help, the final look would not have been complete. My absolute favorite part of the design was the vintage dresser that the sweet buffet was displayed on from one of Aletha's past clients.

Thank you Aletha for letting me be part of such an incredible photo shoot!

Jungle Themed Sweet Table

A couple weeks ago I was asked to create a sweet buffet for a jungle themed baby shower hosted by Jamie Brokus, a very talented local photographer who owns Color Splash Studio in Allegan. The table was for 20 guests and included blue raseberry gumballs, 3 different colored M&M's, chocolate covered pretzels and almonds, as well as mini vanilla and chocolate cupcakes with jungle animal toppers.

A vibrant ocean side table to share with you today via Bridal Party Tees. I am in love with the warm, vibrant colors and the layered sand used throughout the design. The theme, "sands of time" is cleverly used with hour glass parting gifts that have hanging tags that read, "time of your life".

Art Museum Candy Buffet

My mother and I had a blast designing this candy buffet for a wedding this past Saturday at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts. When I told my mother that I had an opportunity to design one at an art museum she got so excited because she is an art teacher and loves all things art related, especially galleries.

Combining both of our creativity we came up with a perfect design for the bride and groom. The bride picked out yellow and white candy and we just went from there on the rest of the design. The whole table was centered around a frame with a candy bouquet flower arrangement and hanging paper flowers with candy centers.

This past weekend I created a unique "sweet buffet" for a bridal shower. The bridal shower was held in a cozy backyard, filled with lush green gardens. Needless to say, it was the perfect backdrop for the table. Some of my favorite elements of the table were the blue peeps and the rock candy tree.

Modern Candy Buffet

This past weekend I set-up a modern candy buffet that was nothing but traditional. For this "Sweet Buffet" the bride didn't want to use the traditional glass apothecary jars for the candy. Instead, I suggested using white porcelain pieces. This way, because the candy wasn't a cohesive color palate, the table still looked uniform. I am thrilled how it turned out and so was the bride :)

Lately hanging centerpieces have really caught my eye. They still portray a dramatic appearance on the table, yet you can see the other people across the table from you. Although hanging them may be a task depending on your event site, they are different and whimsical.

A Candy Wedding

Here is an all out candy wedding. Julia, the bride carried a bouquet of hand spun lollipops, and bobby, the groom sported a lollipop boutonniere made out of polymer clay. Lollipop centerpieces were found on each table throughout the reception along with a plate of cupcakes topped with more polymer clay lollipops.

The most symbolic part of their wedding was how they incorporated a ritual from the Yoruba tradition called "The Five Flavors of Marriage". Julia explains in her blog how it works, "In this tradition the bride and groom taste five candy flavors that represent the five elements, and in turn five different emotions within a relationship. The five flavors used are pungent, salty, sour, bitter, and sweet.

Pungent, symbolized by ginger candy, represents metal, a shield protecting them,
Salty, symbolized by salted licorice, represents fear, water, washing them clean and keeping their marriage flowing;
Sour, symbolized by sour patch kids, represents anger, wood, allowing them both to grow;

Bitter, symbolized by bitter chocolate, represents happiness, fire, cleansing them through joy;

and Sweet, symbolized by pixie sticks, represents meditative thinking, earth, keeping them grounded.

These five tastes represent the many different “flavors” of marriage brought into balance. By tasting each of the flavors, Julia and Bobby have demonstrated that they will be able to get through the hard times in life, and, in the end, enjoy the sweetness of marriage.”

Issue # 8 is out by Utterly Engaged! This issue features eye-catching designs from winners of a design challenge that had to come up with a design out of paper, fabric, and the use of industrial materials to create a one-of-a-kind tablescape.

The table featured below was created by Honey & Poppies and Dolcissima Events, and the photography by Krashing Motions. They created a modern vintage circus themed table and didn't leave out a single detail in their design. Krisd Mauga of Krashing Motions said it best, that this table reminds her of "a dressed up cracker jack box with a real diamond as the prize". Prehistoric Sweet Table

This Prehistoric Dinosaur Party was created by Little Lovely who's son turned 2. She hand made each detail on the table including the cake! I especially love that each child was able to take home a personalized bags with a letter of his or her first name. The grapes in the glass vases were also a perfect touch that added a healthy snack to the table, and paired well with the color scheme.

A majority of the weddings I have been too have had the usual guest book to sign, but these days more unique ways for signatures are appearing. Below are a few of the many guest signature options out there to inspire couples to think outside the box when coordinating details like this for their wedding.

This wedding was planned by Carillon Weddings and used a very personal touch by having guests write sweet notes of encouragement on a burlap square that would later be made into a quilt.

This wedding thumb print tree is very unique and modern. A piece to be cherished always by any couple. I love how different colored green inks were used to give the tree dimension. For more photo's on this amazing wedding visit the talented Jonas Peterson's site.

Another very simple idea is to have guests write a wish to the couple on a piece of paper with ribbon attached so it can be hung among other guests wishes on a bunch of cherry, apple, or magnolia branches. Candy and Dessert Buffets have grown into the new, "hot" trend at weddings, birthdays, corporate parties, etc.. over the past few years. You can see why, they are show-stopping and the hit of any party. They are the reason I have opened a business that specializes in creating these tantalizing sweet tablescapes. I love that each and every buffet is unique in its own way and reflects each events theme and decor perfectly. I love being hands-on and creating tablescapes that bring nothing but smiles to everyone, it is quite a rewarding job if I do say so myself.

When you go the library the shelves are filled with books and there are "Please Be Quiet" signs all over.... well not at this library! Here is a stunning bookshelf filled with scrumptious desserts! Talk about taking the dessert buffet to another level. Its simple and stunning with the each sweet dessert in its own cubby, and I love how the floral arrangements look like they are over flowing into the shelves.

I'm always on the lookout for creative gift ideas for wedding guests, and I certainly found a wonderful sentimental piece designed by Shana Faust and Betsy Dunlop. Kelly & Steve's Backyard Wedding

Wow! I had to share one of the most beautiful outdoor weddings I have ever seen. Every detail from the cozy location to the mason jars and tiny bud vases set the mood and perfect ambiance for Kelly and Steve's wedding.

They chose a neighbors backyard to host the occasion and brought in La Partie Events to plan and execute all the details including the stylish florals. I cant get over the long dark tables that make the bright flowers pop in color, as well as the overhead lighting that set the stage as the sun sets. Sarah Yates from Sarah Yates Photography captured the mood perfectly in all of these images, all of these charming details wouldn't have been possible without such a talented group.

Its only a month away, and its never too early to start thinking about having a little Valentines Day Party. I love this time of year, when you can surround yourself with as many pink or red hearts as possible and snuggle up with the one you love. Keeping it light and bright is what holiday decorating is all about to Cheryl Krecsy in her British Columbia home. I love the natural elements, and the way she brings a soft harmonic balance to each room. White has never been on my list of color choices to decorate with because I have always thought of it as a cold color, but looking at her living room all I want to do is curl up with some hot chocolate on the couch by the fireplace.

For some reason I am in love with winter weddings, maybe its because of how warm and cozy they feel when your inside dancing the night away while the snow is falling outside. Winter themed weddings can go in a variety of directions with decor. The color scheme can vary, but their seems to always be a sparkly something or other somewhere in the room. Here are some jaw dropping winter wedding photo's I just had to share...

What a bouquet, seriously love everything about this. Its natural, simple, unique, and whimsy.

This centerpiece is a nice do-it-yourself project that is classy and elegant. Just remember to buy those plastic bulbs you see in the store that bounce when they fall ;)

Wine and Cheese Party

The Wine and Cheese Party that was thrown last Saturday was a success! Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. My initial thought was to set up the spread on one table, but needless to say there was not enough room for everything. Instead, I placed all the cheese, crackers, meat, fruit, and pumpkin cheesecake pops on the table, and had a seperate table for all the wine.

Taylor, my sis was a huge help with cutting and plating everything so perfect. You would have thought she worked in a deli or something.... ;) she does Lake Street Market.

What a wonderful night filled with laughter, great friends, and lots of food and wine!

Working with Ali was awesome! She was extremely professional and amazing at what she does! When we walked into our reception and saw our sweet buffet table we were thrilled with how it turned out. I would absolutely recommend Ali for any wedding or special occasion!
